HISTORY
Search in The United States
Search for Christian Maturity began in the 1962 from the CYO (Catholic Youth Organization) of San Francisco, California. In May of 1966, the Search for Christian Maturity was adopted by the National Catholic Youth Organization as the official retreat program for the United States of America. In the ensuing years, Search (as most particpants called it) was initiated in over 75 diocese in the U.S. as well as in other countries.
In October of 1962, Monsignor Peter Armstrong and a group of CYO members were having a discussion following a meeting at St. Gregory's Parish Hall in San Mateo, California. Monsignor Armstrong leaned back in his chair after catalogueing all the inherent problems of conducting a spiritual retreat for teenagers and said "It's too bad young people can't give the retreats." Monsignor Armstrong, Director of the Division of Youth Activities in the Archdiocese of San Francisco said, "I no more said those words and Pentecost happened. We sat lookig at each other for a moment and a 17-year-old named Michael Nevin said "Why not?" We went to work on it. After an all night session we had the basic outline to Search for Christian Maturity.
